Chihuahua Pitbull Mix – Chipit/Pithuahua Puppies

A chipit, also called Pithuahua, is a special dog who comes from the prestigious line of breeding between a chihuahua and an American Pitbull. It has inherited interesting traits from its parents and is known for its round eyes, long ears, and a robust body.

Before considering bringing this dog to be a part of your family, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind. The first thing is although it is a toy dog, it has a massive personality. Thanks to the American Pitbull part of its parentage, this dog can be quite a handful as it is very agile. The good thing about this trait is that, if trained properly, it can do wonders while competing in sports.

Temperament

Chipits are quite emotional, and they are at their happiest when they are with their humans. Unlike other breeds, who stop following their humans as they age, you can expect your chipit to be behind you every second you are at home, quite literally.

While they are extremely friendly and are always on a lookout to make friends with different humans, they tend to be attached most with just one person, who would be their special someone. So, if you want a pitbull chihuahua mix for yourself, keep in mind that the one major person would need to be there for them as much as possible.

Chipits are great with kids, but as they are pitbull chihuahua mix, they have a comparatively high energy level. So, this breed would be the best for families with slightly older kids. If the kids know how to handle pets in the past, it would be an added advantage.

  • This chihuahua pitbull mix breed is quite friendly and would have no problem adjusting with your existing pets.
  • If you do not have any pets currently, but you are planning to add more pets to your family in future, it would be better if you introduce your chipit to other animals when it is quite young to make things easier for you in the long run.
  • Along with this, since they have terrier instincts in their blood, you are likely to find them chasing small animals that you might have in your household. So, it would not be advisable to mix those two up.

What to expect in the initial months?

Chipit puppies are known to be very shy, so they will take their own sweet time to warm up to you. Once they start warming up, make sure you socialize them as much as possible so that you can avoid temperamental issues in future. Make sure they are exposed to humans, animals, and situations so that they know how to handle these at a young age.

Daily Care

As a chihuahua and pitbull mix, this breed will need walks as well as short play sessions throughout the day. Which is why, if all the members of the family have jobs, this dog would not be the best fit. You would need to ensure that there is someone in the house who would be responsible for these daily walks and playtimes. Although, if you have a fenced open space, and your dog can access it on its own, it would be the best!

As a pitbull chihuahua mix full grown, it would need a lot of exercises. This breed is known for never being tired; this is where the open space and a game of fetch would come in handy. Special care needs to be taken on days when it is too hot, as the dog would want to play and end up getting heatstroke or be dehydrated. On these days, make sure you give the dog a good indoor game, like a Kong, and if you take it out, ensure that there is a constant supply of cool fresh water.

Even when full grown, chipits are quite small, so make sure there is constant supervision as they might get hurt while playing with larger breeds.

Grooming

Grooming a chihuahua pitbull mix is quite easy. All you need to do is give them a bath every week and brush their coat, and they are good to go. Just make sure the brush you use has stiff bristles. Other than that, just regular care is needed. If you see wax in its ears, dip cotton in ear cleanser and gently clean them. Cut their nails if they feel sharp.

Health Issues to look out for:

While the chances of falling for genetic issues is quite low, the full grown chihuahua and pitbull mix breed can succumb to hip dysplasia, low blood sugar, heart issues, allergies, patellar luxation, and pulmonary disorders. If you see even a slight change in the usual behavior pattern in your pet, even if it is quite small…like it is laying around more than usual, or presses its head against stuff…anything that is out of ordinary, it would be a good idea to have a chat with a vet to ensure everything is ok.
